Kindness. Respect. Compassion.
These are the qualities I hope to instill most in my children.
Of course, I also want them to be strong, fierce, independent women but what would they be without kindness, respect and compassion?
I want my children to be able to show kindness even when others are not kind unto them. I want my children to show respect for, not only others, but for the world around them. And I want my children to show compassion towards those who may not be as fortunate as us.
While I can sit here and tell my children that these are the qualities that make a good person, the best way to I can teach them is to show them.
So when the L.A. Mamacitas invited us to wrap holiday gifts for local foster children, I thought what better way to teach kindness and compassion than giving back. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity and I am so glad I did.
Not only did this opportunity allow Hayden and I to have a conversation about compassion but it also allowed for a really fun time.
We started the event by making new Christmas ornaments for our tree this year. It also was a nice little bonding experience for Hayden and I since we both enjoy crafting. After about an hour and a half, we had finished three ornaments and Hayden suggested we start wrapping the gifts. We we finished, she was so concerned who was delivering the gifts to the children I couldn’t help but smile and think “this is exactly what I hoped for.” Hayden was showing kindness and compassion, as if it was second nature, and that made my heart light up.
I have already started thinking of other ways that we can give back to our community as a family. Ways that will help Hayden see how her acts of kindness really can make a difference in someone else’s life. So if you are in a program or know of any in the LA area that gives back to the community in any way I am open for suggestions!
For the hundredth time, thank you to the lovely ladies at L.A. Mamacitas for the amazing event and extending this wonderful opportunity to us. And thank you to Paramount Pictures for making it all possible!
Make sure to catch Paramount’s latest movie Instant Family in theaters November 16, 2018!
