REDONDO BEACH HISTORIC LIBRARY

I feel like we are already in the dog-days of summer and our break just started! It’s already July and I don’t even have a decent tan yet! Haha. Anyways, the other day I took the girl to a local park that sits just above the beach. It was such a beautiful day; Sunny, warm, cloudless sky, and just a slight ocean breeze. It couldn’t have been more perfect.

As the kids played in the sand, I noticed a very lovely building in the middle of the small park and remembered it was the Redondo Beach Historic Library. Just our luck, haha! So of course, as soon as the kids were done playing, we headed straight over to take a peek.

To our dismay, it is no longer a working library. I know, whomp-whomp. But our little jaunt over was not all in vain. Viewing the exterior and it’s new Spanish/Dutch colonial architecture was good enough for me, even though Hayden and myself would have loved to view the interior. Strictly used as a venue for events now, the building no longer welcomes the public. But regardless it was a sight to see, and I am glad we stopped and played in front of this beautiful building.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Built in 1931 by architect Lovel Bearse Pemberton, the library was constructed on the site of the old Redondo Beach Hotel as a means to commodate the overflowing library of City Hall’s west wing. Filled with as many as 32,000 books at one point, the little seaside building eventually just could not meet the needs of the growing community. And although added in 1981 to the National Register of Historic Places, the library closed its doors for the last time in 1988.  The building served as the Redondo Beach Main Library for nearly sixty years.

  1. Hmm it appears like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any helpful hints for newbie blog writers? I’d definitely appreciate it.

  2. My brother recommended I might like this web site. He was totally right. This post truly made my day. You cann’t imagine simply how much time I had spent for this info! Thanks!
